As the Olympics are only less than a week away, I strongly feel the upcoming event will be an eye opener for the Western world, consider the majority have never seen China's modern side. They will be in total awe, heck even the NBA stars were incredibly impressed by their hotel in Macao, and wait until they see the brand new constructions at Beijing. It is just way beyond everything I have seen and I have watched every Olympic since I was a child.

"It's the biggest place I've ever been in, it's got all the dream stores you ever wanted to go into, and we haven't been able to hit 'em all." - Dwayne Wade
I knew when I was in Shanghai with Estel, I went to a shopping mall that was simply stacked with super high end stores. Versace, Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton . . . and that was the first floor alone. It was of higher scale than any shopping mall I have ever been to here in New York City. A lot of whities (especially hicks from small towns) probably still associate China with what they saw in Raise The Red Lanterns, and they will be blown away.
I predict even more Westerners relocate to China after the Olympics. The RMB (Chinese currency) is still extremely undervalued against the USD. If your company sends you to China and pays you the same wage, you basically doubled your living standard. One of my co-workers was able to transfer to Hong Kong and his pay translated to HKD (which is even cheaper than RMB) basically gave him the equivalent salary of someone two tiers above him. China is also one of the few countries in the world that puts foreigners on a silver platter. Whites are still hot in China, take advantage while you still can!
Let's Just Say The Beijing Airport Is Quite A Bit Nicer Than JFK

Human Rights
It is easy for the tiny little European countries to talk about this subject when they have less population than any of our provinces. You do not run a corporation the same way you run a mom and pop shop, and running a country is no different. Every nation's situation is unique and different, trying to run China Mainland with the same system that powers a tiny island like China Taiwan and you get a total collapse. Then again I guess China breaking apart like Soviet Union is what a lot of westerners want to see, that is exactly why they are supporting the likes of Dalai Lama.
I don't believe the Americans really took human rights into consideration when they dealt with the Indians or more recently, Iraqis. The world is still very much about the survival of the fittest. If you are strong you live. If you are weak you die. It is a lot more subtle than the colonial days, but the big dogs still make the big moves.

From the day I left China in 1990, to the Olympics here in 2008, our country climbed the ladder like duelists going for gladiator. While we can't take the vengeful gladiator title from USA just yet, we are strong enough that even if the western world doesn't like the way we do things, they can't do anything about it. They still have need to do business with us, and they still have to send their precious athletes to Beijing. With the threat of terrorism, the fact that there is a 99% chance we will see a big earthquake in California over the next 30 years (48% chance for a 7.6), and the fact that no country has ever stayed on top of the world for over 100 years, I like our chance for brutality gladiator if the USA continue to lose ratings like they have been.
Pollution
It is funny how the western media came up with the worst possible looking photographs on this subject. Heck I can get dozens of pictures that make NYC look like a third world country.

With the Chinese government cutting down traffic by 50% with the even/odd rule (License plates ending in even number are not allowed into the city on odd days, odd plate numbers are not allowed on even days), and a complete halt on factory/constructions, Beijing's air quality improved leaps and bounds, the pollution index dropping as low as 44. I would like to see Westerners manage pollution index better if they had the same population density to deal with.

they can't do anything about it and still send their precious atheletes to Beijing
I almost expected a response to my Olympic blog.
When many of these athletes have little else to play for besides the Olympics, there really isn't much choice in the matter especially considering the 4 year turn around and limited chances to achieve such success and exposure. And they aren't going to send just some of the national team, and not the rest. Hence why Olympic boycotts are a rarity and generally only happen in the case of war.

a loveless man purchases the services of a woman. upon her arrival, he apologizes profusely for his home's uncleanliness. ten minutes before her arrival, he scurries to and fro, performing overdue chores such as sweeping fallen food crumbs and folding clothes. embarrassed, he declares, "it is not always like this" -- despite all evidence to the contrary. so with china.
