Discord Launches Revamped Age Verification System After Privacy Backlash

Discord has officially rolled out its long-delayed age verification system as of September 23, 2026, months after the platform was forced to pump the brakes following intense backlash over privacy concerns. The original plan, which drew significant criticism earlier in the year, had proposed methods such as video selfies and government ID submission. Discord subsequently delayed the rollout in February 2026 to rework its approach, and has now returned with what it calls "the most privacy-preserving approach we could build."

The revamped system ditches the more invasive identification methods in favor of an "account signal" methodology, where Discord uses an age estimation model built around behavioral and account-based data points to determine a user's likely age group, rather than requiring direct submission of personal documents or biometrics. The move is designed to restrict access to age-gated content on the platform without forcing users to hand over sensitive personal information. Alongside the age verification rollout, Discord also announced a sponsorship deal with sports betting platform FanDuel, a pairing that is sure to raise eyebrows given the platform's large younger user base and the renewed focus on age-appropriate content gatekeeping.
