Miami-Dade Sheriff Pushes Back Hard on Proposed GTA 6 Tourism Partnership

The mayor of Miami-Dade County has been actively pitching Rockstar Games on a bold tourism initiative that would transform parts of the county into real-world recreations of locations from Grand Theft Auto 6. The proposal, which has generated significant buzz as a creative marketing crossover between a major city and one of gaming's biggest franchises, would lean into GTA 6's fictional Leonida state and its Vice City setting, which are widely understood to be inspired by Miami and South Florida. Officials backing the plan see it as a major opportunity to attract tourism dollars and put Miami-Dade on the map for a global gaming audience.

Not everyone is on board, however. The Miami-Dade County Sheriff and local law enforcement representatives have come out strongly against the idea, arguing that aligning the county's brand with Grand Theft Auto sends the wrong message. Police officials described Rockstar's franchise as one "built around criminal activity" and said the game embodies exactly what they "work every single day to prevent." The sharp divide between county leadership and law enforcement has turned what might have been a straightforward promotional deal into a heated local debate about image, values, and the line between entertainment and civic identity.
