Nintendo Switch 2 Tops 23M Units Sold as Profits Soar 150% in Q1 2026

Nintendo has published its first-quarter financial results for fiscal year 2026, covering the period from April through June, and the picture is a study in contrasts. The company reported a 9.5% decrease in net sales year-on-year, yet operating profit surged an extraordinary 150.5%, driven by higher software revenue and approximately $300 million in US tariff refunds. Digital sales were a particular bright spot, climbing 90% compared to the same period last year, signaling a meaningful shift in how Nintendo customers are buying games.

On the hardware side, the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to cement its place in gaming history. The console has now sold more than 23 million units across its first 13 months on the market, maintaining its status as Nintendo's fastest-selling system ever. However, the quarter also showed some expected cooling: hardware unit sales were down 34.4% year-on-year, reflecting the natural comparison against the explosive launch window of mid-2025. Despite that downturn, Nintendo has left its annual hardware sales forecast unchanged, suggesting confidence that the console's momentum will hold through the remainder of the fiscal year.
