Xbox Disc-to-Digital Program Officially Announced, Beta Launches August 31

Microsoft has officially announced its long-rumored disc-to-digital program for Xbox, allowing owners of supported physical games to claim digital entitlements for those same titles. The program covers select Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S games, giving players a way to bridge their physical libraries with the increasingly digital Xbox ecosystem. The Verge had previously reported on the program back in July, but this marks the first official confirmation from Microsoft.

The rollout begins with a beta phase targeting Xbox Insiders starting August 31. During this testing period, participants who own supported physical discs will be able to insert them and unlock a corresponding digital entitlement, letting them play without the disc going forward. While the core concept is straightforward, some outlets have raised questions about how the program will handle specifics such as which titles are supported, whether used or borrowed discs will qualify, and what the long-term roadmap looks like beyond the Insider preview.
